The time has come to cancel the rents

The city, state and national moratoriums on evictions are not enough. As these moratoriums are lifted or overturned in court as rents come due, we still don’t have the money!

As of August 5, 2021, some 620,000 people in the United States have died and more than 35 million COVID-19 cases have been confirmed. People are being evicted from their homes while at the same time the COVID-19 pandemic is surging again. No one should be at risk of losing their home amid a pandemic in the richest country in the world.

Missouri in particular is being ravaged by the Delta variant of COVID-19, with all the health and economic detriment that would be expected from a renewed wave of a deadly virus. Right now between 150,000 to 230,000 Missourians are at risk of eviction. That is almost roughly the equivalent to the entire population of Springfield or Columbia. These numbers are absolutely unacceptable, and represent a profound crisis that must be faced head on. We must demand strong and proactive action from our state and federal elected officials.

Congress must return from their vacation to take emergency action against evictions now. And to ultimately resolve the housing crisis they must cancel the rents and mortgages by wiping clean all debt accumulated over the course of the pandemic
